چکیده

Stand development involves changes in stand structure over time. Knowledge of stand development patterns is crucial for effective forest management, especially of southern bottomland hardwood forests. These forests contain more than 70 tree species, many of which have commercial timber and wildlife habitat value. I n this paper, current techniques i n stand development research are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on stand development studies in bottomland red oaks (Quercus spp.), especially cherrybark oak (Q. pagoda), although examples from other oak forest types are included. These studies were divided into 3 broad categories: pure, single-cohort stands; mixed, single-cohort stands; and mixed, multicohort stands. Management implications based on these development patterns a re discussed, including the importance of many of the nonor less-commercial species during stand development. Areas for future research also are suggested to increase the knowledge base on bottomland hardwood stand development.

Silvicultural Alternatives in Bottomland Hardwoods and Their Impact on Stand Quality

--Bottomland hardwoods occur on some 35 million acres of forest land in swamps, creek margins, river bottoms, and brown loam bluffs from Virginia to Texas. These hardwood types are very important because the wood has great value and is in demand by forest industries. This article discusses silvicultural alternatives such as site-species relationships, how hardwood timber is used, protection, ti...

Stand Development and Silviculture in Bottomland Hardwoods’

INTRODUCTION Silviculture for the production of high-quality timber in southern bottomland hardwood forests involves the application of environmentally sound practices in order to enhance the growth and quality of both individual trees and stands. To accomplish this purpose, silvicultural practices are typically used to regulate stand density, species composition, and stem quality to promote th...

Natural Regeneration of Southern Bottomland Hardwoods

Many mixed hardwood stands found in bottomlands have been degraded by past harvesting practices that resulted in high grading the stand, thereby leaving the forester few options other than regeneration. Economic considerations usually constrain the choices to some form of complete overstory removal if adequate advance regeneration or sprouting potential is available. Success, in terms of number...

Hypotheses for Common Persimmon Stand Development in Mixed-species Bottomland Hardwood Forests

Common persimmon (Diospyros virginiana L.) is a shade-tolerant tree species found in southern bottomland hardwood forests. It is a desired species due primarily to its large fruit used by many wildlife species. While it has been observed as a component in natural reproduction, persimmon is rarely found as an overstory species in maturing bottomland hardwood stands. Unfortunately, little informa...

Silviculture of Southern Bottomland Hardwoods: 25 Years of Change

This paper describes changes that have occurred in the silviculture of southern bottomland hardwood forests over the past 25 years, particularly in terms of modifications to existing silvicultural practices, abandonment of unsuitable practices, and development of new practices. Changes in the focus and objectives of hardwood silviculture and the emergence of new concerns to hardwood silvicultur...
